The Dungeon Big
Band
– something
old, something new
7.30pm,Thursday
2 September 2010
(upstairs in the church)
Jazz comes in a range of styles and, from the start, The
Dungeon has chosen to feature and support new young bands
playing modern originals with a nod to post war classics.
Trad and Dixieland simply isn’t our style.
No surprise then that, having first established a reputation
for evoking the sights and sounds of the legendary Duke
Ellington and Glen Miller big bands of the 1920s, 30s and
40s, The Dungeon Big Band has moved on to the world of
21st Century music. These now include re-workings of jazz
classics and brand new compositions written by Sydney trumpeter
and composer Andy Fiddes, as well as one of the band’s
founding members, Rod Barnes.
This evolution takes the band into the world of fresh
and exciting sounds, a feel and vibe reminiscent of the
Daly Wilson Big Band of the 1970s but laying down a unique
flavour that is The Dungeon Big Band.
Both
The Dungeon and its house big band enjoy reputations as
leaders in the presentation and performance of quality
contemporary jazz. That journey is set to continue with
this concert.
